In the Before-time

Of my earliest memories is the prairie-wolf, my first mother, the butte and its tallgrass plateau my home. How I came to suckle from her, to be one with her litter, sleep with her wolfen fur in my fists, is mystery. This, in the before-time. Before I was taken away

to a human mother. And through this clarity, much is explained: the way I lean, listening,

for a high, distant singing, and of my instinct for the languages of the great grass herds,

and their wind-blown manes, and their sibilant poetry.

A human orderliness did not keep company with me. A dog-shaped shadow I followed

to the clean edge, churned ocean of sky. And slept with my clan inside the earth, all

stilled paws and breath. And learned to watch the eyes before all speech. To smell fear.

That the Sabbath is evening, blood-wash on the far hills, the hour
